Meaning of Bees
On a more human level, bees symbolize order, loyalty and prosperity, as well as warlike ardor and courage.
Thus, due to their divine transcendence and their earthly connection, bees have appeared since ancient times and almost to the present day as an attribute of divine power, ancient supreme pontiffs and popes of the Roman Church as well as emperors and kings, as would be the case of Napoleon.
The bee could not be far from the symbolic and initiatory world of Freemasonry. It is a symbol of orderly behaviour and attentiveness to its queen and its companions in the hive, just as the Mason is orderly in the lodge and attentive to his venerable and his brothers. The bee is a symbol of virtue, the pillar of every brother Mason. Finally, it symbolises obedience, activity and constancy, three virtues of the Mason, who respects legitimate authority and who never aspires to rest. As the bee does not rest, the brother Mason, for his part, is always working for his personal improvement and, above all, for the progress of Humanity.
And honey? It is also a Masonic symbol. It is a spiritual food of saints and sages. Honey is linked to mystical and religious knowledge, spiritual good, and the rebirth that follows the moment of initiation. In this sense, those initiated in the Mysteries of Eleusis received honey in their higher degrees because it is the sign of their new life. Pseudo Dionysus the Areopagite, a Byzantine theologian and mystic between the 5th and 6th centuries, said that the teachings of God were comparable to honey because of its property of purifying and preserving, which is inherent to this food. Thus, honey is linked to Masonic initiation, to the transformation that occurs at that moment. Honey is the fruit of the transmutation of pollen dust and nectar, something similar to what happens to the initiate in whom the different components of his person are integrated, to become a brother.
