Meaning of the hummingbird
A hummingbird is a bird with beautiful shiny metallic colors and a very small size, so much so that more than one can fit in the palm of your hand, but just because it is small doesn't stop it from being special. For us Mexicans, the hummingbird has been seen since the times of Pre-Hispanic Mexico and is very significant to people, because the name of the well-known God of battles Huitzilopochtli means "hummingbird of the south." Ancient legends also tell that hummingbirds have a special magic which is linked from the creation of love to declarations of war, being a symbol associated with both things.
Why is it a symbol of war?
Hummingbirds belong to the Trochilidae family and are one of the smallest warm-blooded animals on the planet. They are also one of the fiercest animals in the ecosystem when it comes to defending their territory to defend their flowers from which they have the nectar that they feed on to obtain their energy.
How is it associated with love?
From the Nahuatl culture it was believed that by carrying a representation of these birds at the height of the heart one will have a lot of luck in finding true love regardless of a person's appearance, personality or even age and social class.
Also due to the incredible speed with which it moves, the hummingbird was known as a messenger and guardian of time. It is able to fly backwards, and teaches us that we can remember our past with joy, and not remain stuck in it in order to move forward.
