The cross
After Jesus' death he was nailed to a wooden cross on Mount Calvary determined that all people would receive forgiveness for their sins. His death, however, was really the culmination of Jesus committing his daily cross - an internal cross, symbolic of the quality that his self-will was sacrificed and thus all sin in the flesh was put to death.
Since then, the cross means the beginning of life beyond death, just as wearing a cross around the neck is the meaning of being a faithful believer in God, as well as having faith that God helps us and will take care of us day by day, because of this it is also common to cross oneself by making the signs of the cross in the mornings or before starting daily tasks to ask God to help us end our day well.
