The hummingbirds
Its entire body is no bigger than a small almond; it has a long tail, a well-proportioned head, a short neck, and a long, thin, fine beak. It is white at the base and black at the tip. Its wings are long and small; it is so light that when it flies it is almost invisible and can only be perceived by the humming sound it makes. Its eyes are very cheerful and beautiful. Its feathers are mostly green, with yellow and blue spots. It goes around the gardens sucking on the flowers and, without stopping its flight, it puts its beak in the flower and extracts the juice with such delicacy that it neither hurts it nor even tilts it down.
Why is a hummingbird the symbol of the god of battles?
Hummingbirds belong to the Trochilidae family and are the smallest warm-blooded animals on the planet, although they are also some of the fiercest when it comes to territorial disputes over their precious flowers, from which they obtain their energy, since each one has to drink around 1,000 flowers a day to obtain the amount of nectar necessary for its sustenance.
For this reason, battles between hummingbirds can be merciless and ruthless, and it is fortunate that they are not very large, or who knows what they would be capable of. As an additional fact, it should be mentioned that, in relation to their size, they have one of the largest musculatures of all birds on the planet.
Do you remember I told you that the hummingbird also creates love?
In the Nahuatl world there is a word to designate the act of making someone fall in love through spells and that is huilotla. One of these spells said that to have luck in love you had to carry a hummingbird close to your heart and then it would never matter again if you were poor, old or ugly. Sadly, many people even today trust more in amulets than in their own attitude and there are those who go so far as to capture hummingbirds to embalm them and carry out these spells. This is a very common practice in the Sonora market in Mexico City, so much so that they have been brought to the brink of extinction in the Valley of Mexico.
Further north, in Querétaro, the Hñä-Hñü have a similar belief, as young men use the tsut'udoni, which translates as “flower bird,” to be able to approach girls, as they are poetically compared to flowers. The ritual consists of having the hummingbird close to the heart wrapped in a white cloth that represents the purity of the girl in order to be able to approach her. The second time, a ribbon and a green cloth are tied to the wrapping, which means the hope of having the girl at some point. On the third occasion, the bird must be wrapped in a ribbon and a red cloth as a sign of the end of the ritual. It all sounds very poetic until you realize that due to the insecurity of a boy, an innocent hummingbird lost its life, which ends the romantic vision of the spell.
