Lafrys's Hummingbird
The spatule-tailed hummingbird, wonderful hummingbird or admirable hummingbird (Loddigesia mirabilis) is a species of medium-sized hummingbird (up to 15 cm) and blue, green and copper colors with a violet crest, the only member of the genus Loddigesia, this bird is endemic to the Utcubamba River basin, in the high jungle of northern Peru.
The spatule-tailed hummingbird is unique among birds in that it has only four tail feathers. Its most notable feature is the presence of two long, racket-shaped outer tail feathers in the male, which cross each other and end in large, violet-blue discs or "spatulas," which it can move independently and its tail is twice its height.
Meaning of Hummingbirds?
The hummingbird embodies a symbolism with a powerful spiritual meaning, as it represents the resurrection of souls. In some ancient cultures it means death in the cold nights of winter and resurrection to life with the dawn of spring.
This beautiful bird, which in Nahuatl is called huitzilin, is considered the nahual of war. Among the Mayans it also occupied a privileged place, acting as a sort of messenger between the gods and humans. In both cases the hummingbird was admired for its vitality and beauty.
