Aztec sun
The Sun Stone, wrongly called the Aztec calendar, is a monolith that represents the way in which the Aztecs conceived time according to their worldview.
It is estimated that it was built by the Aztecs (also known as Mexicas) between the years 1250 and 1521 AD, just before the process of European conquest and colonization.
For a long time, it was assumed that the Sun Stone was the Aztec calendar. The great wealth of carvings of symbols, ideograms and other details referring to time prolonged this confusion.
The Sun Stone, for example, contains the ideograms of the 20 days of the Aztec solar cycle, but it lacks certain elements to be a calendar. The months of the solar cycle are not represented, nor is the ritual cycle of the Mexicas.
