Sword-billed Hummingbird
The sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera) is a species of hummingbird that lives in the Andes (from Venezuela to Bolivia), with a long beak and tongue as an adaptation to its diet based on the nectar of certain types of flowers, such as Passiflora mixta.
This species of hummingbird has the longest bill in the world relative to its total body length. An adult sword-billed hummingbird measures about 24 to 25 cm in total length, of which 10 to 12 cm is the bill. Its bill is incredibly long and slightly upturned.
Meaning of Hummingbirds?
The hummingbird embodies a symbolism with a powerful spiritual meaning, as it represents the resurrection of souls. In some ancient cultures it means death in the cold nights of winter and resurrection to life with the dawn of spring.
Aztec History
In Aztec mythology, this bird represents the powerful sun god Huitzilopochtli, conceived by his mother after she pressed against her breasts a ball of hummingbird feathers "the soul of a warrior" that fell from the sky. Thus, they remind us that people must be strong and face adversity with their heads held high, always trusting in their abilities.
