Dragonflies
Commonly and for many cultures, dragonflies represent prosperity, good luck, strength, peace, harmony, purity and freedom. As a creature of the wind, the dragonfly totem represents change. Its iridescent wings are very sensitive to the slightest breeze, so we are reminded to be alert and pay attention to the direction that the “wind” can give to our lives, lest we find ourselves caught off guard and helpless in the middle of a storm. Dragonflies are also creatures of the water and like any creature related to this element, they symbolize the subconscious, meditation, inner peace, dreams and thoughts. These meanings are particularly associated with Asian cultures (mainly China and Japan) and native cultures of the American continent.
Dragonflies are considered by many to carry messages related to deep thought and therefore suggest that we pay attention to our deepest desires and dreams. They also symbolize the erratic and light way in which we move through our lives just as these insects fly over the waters where they live.
The dragonfly is also considered a reminder that when our deepest thoughts rise to the surface we should pay attention to them, learn from them and the lessons they will bring us for our future life. They are also interpreted as evidence that we are incapable of hiding what we most desire, just as the reflection of the dragonfly is reflected on the surface of the water. In other words, our thoughts (even the deepest and most desired ones) may not be so obvious to our senses and yet they may still be there and affect our existence immeasurably, sometimes even without us being really aware of their magnitude.
