Meaning of doves
The dove of peace is a very ancient symbol. It appears in the Book of Genesis and represents peace and reconciliation after the Great Flood. After the Second World War, the dove of peace became a very well-known image again, due to some drawings made by Picasso. Traditionally, the dove of peace carries an olive branch in its beak and is white.
The dove was the animal sent by Noah from the ark, where a pair of each animal that inhabited the planet remained sheltered, waiting for the end of the flood. Noah sent the dove when he saw several days without rain, to investigate the situation… The dove returned with its olive branch, symbolizing that there were already trees that were no longer flooded, and that therefore it was now possible to return to the earth again. The myth and the image of the dove carrying the olive branch became a familiar and universal image.
The dove is also associated with the mother figure in historical symbolism. For example, the Virgin Mary in Christian legend sometimes appears in the form of a dove (“the white dove” is the Virgin of Rocío for example). The dove is commonly seen in Christian art with Mary, as a symbol of care, devotion, purity and peace. Also in Christianity the dove is associated with the Holy Spirit, because of its heavenly purity, and because the symbol of the dove is a representation of the spirit and soul.
